Wrestling divas

The term diva in wrestling history was introduced by the famous Tammy Lynn Sytch, better known in the WWF under her performing name "Sunny". She managed various wrestlers in the WWF and brought sexuality in a field where force and brutality were the top attraction. After Tammy left the scene, Rena Mero, known to WWF fans as "Sable", came over to take the female leading role.

She was the manager of her husband, Marc Mero, but enjoyed a greater popularity than him. Considering the success of women fighters, the WWE Women's Championship was started and female performers were hired for the show. The term diva, first used by Sable on a 1999 edition of RAW, would permanently remain in fans' memory. Many of them consider her as the original WWF Diva.

Even though Sable left the WWF, the company hired more female performers that would become known as "divas." Starting 2000, Amy Dumas or "Lita"focused her attention on the WWF Women's Championship. She performed difficult moves, combined with the sexual elements, thus raising the bar for future wrestling divas.

Trish Stratus made her debut around the same time as Dumas. She started off as a valet, but, along with the autumn of 2001, was trained by then Diva trainer Finlay winning the women's title. A new series of female talents came in 2002, along with the change of WWF to WWE. More and more females were hired, Sable even returning to compete for the WWE Women's Title. "The sexiest women on television" was the title WWE announcers used starting with 2006 for wrestling divas. Along with the end of 2006, Trish Stratus and Lita left the WWE, leaving mostly new divas in the spotlight.
